2007 : l'année du dauphin.

Dear friend
Happy New Year and welcome to the first WDCS
e-newsletter of 2007.
2007 is Year of the Dolphin! WDCS and the UN
Convention for Migratory Species are working with other partners to
celebrate dolphins, raise awareness of the threats they face and ensure
that they are properly protected. You can help!
HECTOR’S DOLPHINS ON THE BRINK
Some of the
smallest and most endangered dolphins in the world may be facing
extinction, if more is not done to protect them.
Hector’s dolphins
are only found aroundthe New Zealand coastline, but
today they face a serious threat from gill-nets and trawl-nets, in
which they can become entangled and die potentially long, draw-out
deaths. A few deaths a year are likely to have a serious impact on the
survival of some of the Hector’s dolphin populations, yet it is
estimated that more than100 may be dying in nets each year.
Voluntary codes of
conduct requesting fishers not to set their nets in areas important to
the dolphins are not working. Yet, new measures, brought in by the New
Zealand Government to help protect the dolphins, involve only further
voluntary control of fisheries.
We need your help
to call for stronger protection for these dolphins, to protect these
fragile populations. Please send an e-mail to New Zealand’s Ministers for
Fisheries and Conservation urging them to take urgent and strong
action.
